The medieval Armenia was notable for its qualified and high education. In these universities people could have not only religious but also civil education as well as different kinds of art. The armenian miniature had a worldwide fame which was also taught in the monasteries and universities.
One of the biggest universities was Gladzor, the fame of which was spread not only in Armenia but also out of it-Clicia,Crimea,Georgia and so on.Being founded in the 13th century it was known as the “Second Athens”. Maths, Geometry, Astronomy, Music, Grammar, Rhetorics, Writing and other sciences and arts were taught in Gladzor university.
Till now it’s not clear where exactly Gladzor was but the most likely is the territory of Tanahat monastery where foundations of rectangular and quadrate structures are found. In 1984 in Vernashen village a few km away from Tanahat, a museum dedicated to Gladzor university was founded.
